Basically, it comes down to the “bones” of the cabinets, or the cabinet boxes.  You can easily replace doors, drawer boxes and drawer fronts, and you can even reface cabinet fronts.  But, if the cabinet box is in disrepair, you can only put so much “lipstick on a pig”, but it is still a “pig”.  So, if you have structurally sound cabinet boxes, you can essentially turn your kitchen into a modern kitchen with updated colors and styles without having to replace countertops and tear out the old cabinets.  Can this save you money?  Usually.  But it depends on what you want to accomplish.  If you want to redesign the kitchen, it may be less expensive to start from scratch with new cabinets and a brand new design.
